Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

It is completely normal to feel afraid when we sense danger. It is this fear that activates sudden psychological changes to either fight—defend ourselves from the imminent danger—or flight—avoid danger at all cost. This “fight or flight” response is a healthy reaction intended to protect ourselves from harm. However, in PTSD, this healthy response is either changed or damaged and a person often feels stressed out or fearful even when the perceived danger no longer exists.

While normally associated with war experiences, traumatic events such as child abuse, automobile accidents, and natural disasters can cause PTSD.
